Description: |
| Reporting to the VP of R&D, this R&D Director will manage (directly and indirectly) a group of 10-20 engineers, scientists, and technicians who are responsible for on-time and on-budget delivery of product development milestones. |
Duties: |
• Works with the R&D VP to develop and implement R&D strategies
• Makes and implements resource allocation decisions in support of prioritized portfolio objectives
• Oversees the development of R&D specific project plans that are created by R&D project Core Team Members (CTM's)
• Holds weekly reviews with CTM's to ensure that projects are on schedule and makes appropriate course corrections when needed
• Ensures functional excellence in R&D by:
o Helping project CTM's build appropriate risk management strategies into their project plans
o Conducts first-principles reviews with project CTM's to ensure soundness of technical approach early in project lifecycles
o Ensures that appropriate requirements planning is completed in conjunction with Marketing so that product development expenditures result in commercial successes
• Develops technology mapping and sourcing plans in support of key initiatives
• Drives key strategic technology initiatives
• In conjunction with IP council, builds and manages intellectual property strategy and plans
• Performs functional competency and capability assessments and develops and implements improvement plans
• Leads, manages and mentors his/her team and supports direct reports in the development planning and review process, including Talent Acquisition.
• Establishes and manages key technology partnerships (academics, consultants, inventors, industry).
• Establishes and manages OEM relationships.
• Develops and manages R&D budget. Works closely with CTL on project budgets.
• Acts as technical reviewer at DFSS and DFMA reviews and provides technical mentoring to R&D team members.
• Participates in VOC work to develop segment and product strategies.
Maintains relevant competency and compliance on product quality (PRP, Design History, DMS, QDMS).

Qualifications: |
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Biomedical Engineering required, MS or Ph.D. a plus
Minimum of 7 years of progressively increasing responsibility managing R&D engineers in a fast-paced Medical or Diagnostic product development environment
Strong leadership skills
• Organization skills - The ability to distill objectives into a set of actionable activities.
• Decision making skills - The ability to organize a large amount of conflicting and
sometimes irrelevant information into a concise format. Willingness to make
tough/unpopular decisions when consensus does not exist within the team
• Functional expertise - 10 years in a Medical or Diagnostic R&D environment. Minimum of 7 years managing technical professionals
Project management skills
• Project management experience - Been involved in at least one successful or
unsuccessful project from beginning to end, where his/her input influenced the success or
failure of that project.
• Sense of urgency - An inherent sense of urgency or non-complacent personality.
• Project management software - Trained in the use of project management software.
• Project management concepts and theory - Trained on key project management concepts
such as critical path identification, proper definition and use of milestones, resource need
estimation and management, etc.
Strong interpersonal skills
• Mentoring ability - Recognize growth needs of individuals and willingness to council and
mentor members of the team to develop technical, organizational, and interpersonal
competency.
• Influencing skills - Build consensus on a plan of action among a team of individuals who
may have competing agendas. Ability to influence individuals who are not direct reports.
• Non-verbal communication awareness - Recognize, through non-verbal cues, when
individuals are: being pushed to hard, agreeing verbally but not mentally, overwhelmed,
afraid to offer an opinion, etc. The ability to extract input from all team members such that
their input is recognized and applied.
Presentation skills
• Speaking ability - Comfortable creating and communicating a compelling argument for a
course of action to a panel of senior executives and functional managers.
• Writing ability - Distill complicated information into an easily understood and compelling
case for a course of action.
Presence to interact with senior management
• Political astuteness - Awareness of organizational sensitivities/personal agendas and
ability to navigate through to garner support for a particular course of action.
• Confidence - Confidence that comes with professional experience and
having been involved in successful as well as unsuccessful projects.
Process orientation
• Strong process orientation - understands the value of process and its limitations.
• Familiarity with SCS process and Core Team structure and purpose.
Business skills
• Business case preparation and analysis.
• Familiarity with financial statements (P&L), Understanding of concepts such as Net
Present Value, Return on Investment, and other project financial metrics
Knowledge of Design for Six Sigma Methodology
Knowledge of Phase/Gate product development method
